The theme of World Mental Health Day (October 10, 2017) was "mental health in the workplace." Workplaces are rapidly changing, and definitions of goals sometimes change from month to month. It is estimated that 25% of mental health problems are caused by depression and anxiety in the workplace, and job turnover due to stress is as high as 40%.
It is common to think that stress simply has to be endured, dealt with. This is the wrong approach. A study of some 15,000 middle and senior managers in nearly 100 corporations in India found that a high price is paid for living in the fast lane. The average cardiovascular risk worldwide is 48%. Indian managers' risk is 60%.
Worldwide, more than 300 million people suffer from depression, a leading cause of disability. Many of these people also suffer from anxiety, and consultants from PERC, a Hong Kong-based consulting firm, say anxiety levels are rising dramatically as globalization spreads. The WHO estimates that depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy $1 trillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) a year in lost productivity. That's elsewhere... and you - Polish managers.... How do you feel?
