Autism diagnosis - Warsaw
What is the autism spectrum?
According to the latest ICD-11 medical classification, autism is a spectrum of disorders, not a disease, because there is no single pattern of functioning levels for people with autism.
Autistic disorders can be observed even in young children, but full symptoms often appear much later. People with autism can function at different intellectual and language levels. Their symptoms can be mild and invisible to others or, on the contrary, aggravated in a way that makes independent existence impossible.
Autism is not curable, but those affected by the spectrum can be supported through behavioral methods (such as individual therapy, group therapy classes, or social skills training) and pharmacologically.
The sooner the diagnostic procedure and medical examination are carried out, the more comfortable the life of a person on the autism spectrum will be.
What symptoms fall under the autism spectrum?
The symptoms of autism are not the same for all people on the spectrum, and that means they may occur all at once or only some of them may occur.
Key symptoms include:
❌ persistent difficulties in starting and maintaining communication and social interaction;
❌ problems with understanding and responding appropriately to the verbal and nonverbal communication of others;
❌ difficulties using speech and language in social interactions;
❌ impairment in the integration of spoken language with typical complementary nonverbal signals such as eye contact, gestures, facial expressions and body language;
❌ Inability to imagine and respond to the feelings, emotional states and attitudes of others;
❌ Inability to adapt one's behavior to different social situations;
❌ limited interests and difficulties in establishing typical peer relationships;
❌ restricted, repetitive, and inflexible behavioral patterns, such as resistance to new experiences, excessive adherence to specific routines, and stereotyped motor movements;
❌ a lifelong excessive and persistent hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli or intense interest in certain stimuli;
❌ ritualized patterns of behavior (e.g., preoccupation with arranging or sorting objects in a certain way) that serve no apparent external purpose.
Diagnosis of the autism spectrum is a complex process. If you notice the above symptoms in your child, a close adult or yourself, be sure to consult a specialist, such as a psychiatrist.
Will an autism spectrum be diagnosed by a child psychologist or a child psychiatrist?
Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders can be carried out by both a child psychologist and a child psychiatrist.
The child psychologist will conduct a detailed diagnostic interview and psychometric tests (including the ADOS-2 test, Autism Diagnosis Observation Schedule). Observation of the child can take place, for example, while playing together, but the discussion of the diagnosis already takes place without the presence of the child. At the CPP Center for Professional Help, the parents themselves are invited to the first visit, only at the next visit does the child appear.
A child psychiatrist can evaluate both the child's behavior and biological functioning. In the case of children with aggressive behavior, he can prescribe appropriate calming medication, which a psychologist is not authorized to do.
In practice, it is often recommended that the diagnosis of autism in a child, or an adult, involve a diagnostic team, including a general practitioner, speech therapist, psychiatrist, child neurologist and psychologist. This ensures a comprehensive final assessment.
