Get out of addiction: Addiction therapy - Warsaw

What is addiction and what is codependency?

If you can no longer control your behavior because you feel a compulsion to use a substance or perform a certain action, even though you are harming yourself or those close to you by doing so, then you are an addict.

If your life is largely focused on supporting or maintaining the addict, at the expense of your own needs, health and boundaries, then you are a codependent.

How do you recognize that it's already an addiction?

❌ Lack of control over the use of a substance or specific behavior, despite attempts to curb it.

❌ The need for more and more substance or more intense involvement in a behavior.

❌ Withdrawal from daily life, loss of interests, abandonment of interpersonal relationships.

❌ Financial, professional, health, or personal problems that nevertheless do not cause you to give up a stimulant or stimulating activity.

❌ Shorter and shorter periods in which a person thinks soberly about their behavior or tries to find help.

❌ Progressive physiological withdrawal symptoms (abstinence syndrome) or use of the same or similarly acting substance to reduce the severity of symptoms or avoid abstinence symptoms.

Are there different types of addictions?

We are talking about four types of addiction:

  1. Mental addiction - is the result of the interaction between the substance taken, the person taking it and the context in which this interaction occurs.

  2. Physical (physiological) addiction - results from the effect of an agent (e.g., alcohol, drugs, narcotics) on the body's metabolic processes.

  3. Social addiction - involves the desire to belong to a social group that considers the use of psychoactive substances as a customary norm and an integrating element.

  4. Behavioral addiction - is an addiction to performing a given activity or to given drives, e.g.: computer games, internet, gambling, eating, shopping, sex, etc.

Addicts may suffer from memory loss, fluctuating moods, depression, gastrointestinal complaints, cardiac ailments and experience confusion. They are often irritable and, in extreme cases, do not control their aggression.

Recognize these symptoms in yourself or a loved one? Start treatment for addiction!

Why start addiction treatment as soon as possible?

✅ The sooner an addict begins treatment, the better for his or her health, social relationships and overall well-being.

✅ Immediate initiation of treatment, including on an outpatient basis, can prevent the problem from worsening and its negative health consequences - physical (e.g., permanent damage to the heart) and psychological (e.g., the formation of mental disorders).

✅ The sooner an addict begins treatment, the better the chances of success and successfully overcoming addiction.

✅ Prompt intervention can reduce the risk of relapse and help achieve lasting change (such as sustained sobriety).

✅ Starting treatment early can help repair relationships with loved ones and restore trust.

✅ Addiction therapy can help you return to a healthy and productive life.

Help for codependents

It's been said a lot that it's easier to recover from addiction having the support of loved ones. However, it should not be forgotten that co-dependents take on many difficult emotions and have to deal with many difficult situations.

Take advantage of the help that therapists offer to codependents:

  • Learn healthier strategies for dealing with difficult situations and emotions;

  • stop the breakdown of your relationships with other people;

  • Understand your own needs, boundaries and values, and learn to take better care of yourself;

  • Improve your relationship with the addict by learning new forms of communication and establishing boundaries;

  • Stop being ashamed of your situation and take advantage of the support provided by a safe therapeutic environment.
