What are anxiety disorders?

Fear is a natural reaction of the body that helps avoid real dangers. It protects us from danger, such as preventing us from stepping onto a busy roadway or jumping into water in unfamiliar places. However, in the case of fear, the situation is different - it is not always justified in reality..

Anxiety disorders are a broad group of mental problems, classified as so-called neurotic disorders, associated with stress and somatic symptoms.

Prominent among them are:

  • Phobias - intense, disproportionate fear of certain situations, objects or phenomena.

  • Generalized anxiety disorder - chronic feelings of tension and anxiety, unrelated to a specific stimulus.

  • Panic attacks - sudden episodes of severe anxiety accompanied by physical symptoms, such as palpitations, shortness of breath or feelings of loss of control.

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) - intrusive thoughts and compulsions to perform certain activities.

  • Reactions to severe stress and adjustment disorders - occurring after traumatic experiences.

  • Dissociative disorders - problems with integrating memories, identity and control over one's own body.

  • Somatic disorders - physical ailments that cannot be medically explained, often associated with anxiety.

It is estimated that up to 15-20% of the population experiences anxiety disorders. The problem affects children, adolescents and adults alike, more often women, although it also occurs in men.

How do anxiety disorders manifest themselves?

Symptoms can vary depending on the type of disorder, but the most common include:

  • Continuous anxiety and tension,

  • difficulties with concentration,

  • sleeping problems,

  • excessive sweating,

  • irritability,

  • Breast chest pain,

  • the tendency to exaggerate threats and create negative scenarios.

Panic attack sufferers may additionally experience sudden feelings of terror, palpitations, dizziness and shortness of breath.

What causes anxiety disorders?

Anxiety disorders have a variety of causes, including biological, psychological and environmental factors. Among their most common causes are:

  • Genetic predisposition - a tendency to anxiety can be hereditary.

  • Strong experiences and stress - such as loss of a loved one, divorce, illness.

  • Personality traits - perfectionism, low self-esteem, excessive sensitivity.

  • Health problems - some medical conditions, such as hormonal disorders, can exacerbate anxiety.

  • Past experiences - violence, neglect, childhood traumas.

Can anxiety disorders be cured?

Yes, appropriate therapy can effectively deal with anxiety. The best results come from a combination of psychotherapy (especially cognitive-behavioral therapy) and pharmacotherapy when necessary.

Lack of treatment can lead to serious consequences, such as:

  • deterioration of quality of life,

  • difficulties in work and relationships,

  • increased risk of depression and other mental disorders,

  • Proneness to social isolationj,

  • In extreme cases - suicidal thoughts.

What does the treatment look like?

The primary method of therapy is cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (CBT), which helps identify and change unfavorable thinking and behavioral patterns. In some cases, anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications are also used. Support from loved ones and stress-reduction techniques such as meditation and regular physical activity are also crucial.

Anxiety disorders are common, but they can be effectively treated. It is important not to underestimate the problem and to consult a specialist if necessary.
