Make your life comfortable: Psychiatric diagnosis - Warsaw
Psychiatric diagnosis is a key step in the treatment of mental disorders. It helps identify the causes of problems and determine the best course of treatment.
When to see a psychiatrist?
Be sure to consult a psychiatrist if you notice the following symptoms in yourself or a loved one:
❌ A state of depressed mood that lasts for an extended period of time (such as sadness, anxiety, or anger).
❌ Difficulty concentrating and lack of motivation.
❌ Avoiding social contacts.
❌ Self-destructive thoughts (about hurting oneself or about suicide).
❌ Emotional difficulties that lead to experimentation with psychoactive substances or alcohol.
❌ Symptoms of eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, or compulsive overeating).
❌ Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after experiencing a traumatic event (accident, natural disaster) or experiencing violence.
❌ Chronic sleep problems (e.g., insomnia).
❌ Symptoms of mental illness (e.g., depressive states, anxiety disorders, bipolar affective disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, etc.).
❌ Panic attacks, delusions, or disturbances of consciousness.
Proper diagnosis helps control symptoms that impede daily functioning and restore mental balance.
What is a psychiatric diagnosis?
Psychiatric diagnosis is the process by which a mental health professional - such as a psychiatrist, child psychiatrist or other licensed psychotherapist - evaluates and identifies a mental disorder in a patient. The diagnosis process includes:
Clinical interview - a detailed interview with the patient, during which the specialist collects information on symptoms, medical history, family history of mental disorders, lifestyle, social environment and other relevant aspects of the patient's life;
observation - during the visit, the specialist observes the patient's behavior, the way he or she speaks, the expression of emotions and other non-verbal indicators;
Psychological tests - the specialist can offer various psychological tests, questionnaires and assessment scales to help accurately assess the patient's symptoms and mental functioning;
medical tests - sometimes a specialist may order certain medical tests to rule out other causes of symptoms, such as neurological or hormonal problems.
Once a diagnosis is made, the specialist creates a treatment plan. Psychiatric treatment may include psychological therapy (psychotherapy), pharmacotherapy, family therapy, social support (for example, in the case of eating disorders, such support will be provided by a nutritionist) and other interventions tailored to the patient's individual needs.
Why ask about your mental health?
Life satisfaction and proper relationships
People who take care of their mental health experience higher levels of life satisfaction, such as having a greater ability to enjoy daily activities and being able to build and maintain satisfying relationships with others.
Regulation of emotions
Taking care of mental health helps develop skills to regulate emotions, which reduces the risk of conflict and improves communication.
Personal development
People in good mental health are more productive, creative and effective in achieving their goals. They are more open to learning, developing new skills and taking on challenges, which translates into success in various spheres of life.
Balance of the body
Prompt intervention and correct psychiatric diagnosis manage nagging symptoms and prevent them from escalating. People in good mental health are more likely to take care of their bodies, which in turn has a positive impact on their physical health.
