What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurobiological disorder. Its causes can include genetic factors (gene mutations), atypical neurometabolism, anatomical factors (functional abnormalities of brain structures), neurodevelopmental disorders, and prenatal factors (complications during pregnancy and childbirth) and environmental factors.

How to diagnose ADHD in adults?

The symptoms listed above, which make your daily life difficult, may indeed suggest that your diagnosis is ADHD. However, similar symptoms are produced by other disorders, such as personality disorders, anxiety disorders, etc., so schedule a consultation with a psychologist or psychiatrist to get your ADHD diagnosis confirmed.

✅ ADHD diagnosis has many stages. It begins with an interview, which consists of a series of psychological tests - including: the DIVA-5 test, which allows for a general assessment of the patient's functioning, or the innovative MOXO test, which measures, among other things, reaction time disorders. Their results will confirm whether your symptoms meet the medical criteria for ADHD.

✅ A specialist psychologist or psychiatrist will discuss with you your development during childhood and school age. He will question you about your treatment history and difficult experiences, but may also want to verify information from your certificates or school opinions. If you have such, bring them with you to the appointment.

✅ After the interview, the specialist will determine the next plan of action, i.e. how the treatment will proceed, whether it will be necessary to start pharmacotherapy, etc.

✅ ADHD in adults, as in children, can be treated by reducing symptoms. Behavioral methods (psychological therapy - including cognitive-behavioral and other forms of therapy) and pharmacotherapy are used to treat ADHD. Only a psychiatrist can select the appropriate medication.

✅ ADHD symptoms differ between the sexes:

  • In men, symptoms are often more noticeable and related to outward behavior. They may exhibit greater impulsivity and a high need for physical activity. Their problems are noticeable as early as childhood, between the ages of 6-7. ADHD in adult men often leads to problems with the law, substance abuse and a tendency to engage in risky behavior.

  • In women, ADHD symptoms are more likely to be more "internal" and thus less noticeable to those around them. They have pronounced attention deficit disorder, problems with organization and time management, and low self-esteem. Noticeable symptoms of ADHD in women appear much later than in men, around the age of 12, so that they are often mistaken for symptoms of adolescence. In adult female patients, ADHD is often misdiagnosed as an anxiety disorder, personality disorder, depression or hormone-related mood disorder.

Both sexes face feelings of shame and inadequacy, which is why the diagnostic interview is so important.
