Marriage therapy: FAQ

In what situations can couples therapy (marital therapy) be ineffective?

Therapy is an attempt to reorganize the relationship and find a further path together. However, there are situations in which couples therapy may be less effective or ineffective, such as:

⛔ When your partner or partner shows no interest in working on the relationship, it will be difficult to make progress.

⛔ When domestic violence has occurred in your relationship, couples therapy will be neither safe nor appropriate.

⛔ When there is a decision on the part of your partner or partner to end the relationship.

⛔ When your partner or partner hides important information from you and the psychotherapist, such as infidelity.

⛔ When your and your partner's or partner's goals are diametrically opposed and there is no way to reconcile them.

⛔ When your partner or partner is struggling with addiction to psychoactive substances or alcohol.

However, don't assume on your own that it's not worth taking up therapy in advance if any of the situations mentioned apply to you. Let the therapist be the one to assess whether working on the relationship will be possible. It may be that talking to a specialist will convince your partner or partner to enter into a relationship.

How long does couples therapy (marriage therapy) last?

Marriage psychotherapy is a long-term process.
